The Best Damn Thing: Avril’s songs and what they mean!
Girlfriend: This track was written by Avril and Dr. Luke. Avril wrote the chorus in under 2 minutes and claimed she wanted to create a track that was fun, bratty and dancey. In the track you can hear Avril clapping, laughing and blowing into beer bottles. The single reached number one and was the most watched video in YouTube history.
I Can Do Better: This track was also written by Avril and Dr. Luke. Avril was drunk during the writing/recording process. The song is about moving on, being strong and doing better.
Runaway: This track was written by Avril, Dr. Luke and Kara DioGuardi. The track is about having a bad day, but feeling alive and wanting to let go.
The Best Damn Thing: Avril wrote this along side Butch Walker. The song is meant to be bratty and playful with the lyrics, “I’m the best damn thing that your eyes have ever seen.”
When You’re Gone: Avril wrote this also with Butch Walker. It’s the first ballad on the album. It can relate to missing a loved one or a friend.

I Don’t Have To Try: This track was written by Avril and Dr. Luke. The track was meant to be bratty and playful with the lyrics, “I don’t care what you’re saying, I don’t care what you’re thinking, I don’t care about anything, get ready mother fucker ‘cause I’m happening.”

By request! Under My Skin: Avril’s songs and what they mean!
By popular demand off my post about Avril’s debut album 2002’s “Let Go” the songs and what they mean, here is the Under My Skin edition which was released in 2004!
Take Me Away: This rock track was written by Avril Lavigne and Evan Taubenfeld! The song talks about the feeling of confusion, lost and rage. She feels no one understands. All she wants is to be taken away.
Together: This track was written by Avril Lavigne and Chantal Kreviazuk. The lyrics speak of sharing a relationship with someone that just isn’t working out. Avril describes it as not feeling right with this person with the lyrics, “Something just isn’t right, I can’t feel it inside.”
Don’t Tell Me- This was the first single off Avril’s second album. Avril wrote it herself about not falling into sexual pressures with a guy. The song isn’t about abstinence but about independence and standing up for yourself in those terms with the lyrics, “Don’t try to tell me what to do, don’t try to tell me what to say. You’re better off that way.”
He Wasn’t- This single was released in the UK only written by Avril and Chantal Kreviazuk. The song is about a guy who didn’t turn out how she thought he would. The feelings weren’t there like she first assumed with the lyrics, “He wasn’t what I wanted, what I thought no.”
How Does It Feel- Avril and Chantal also wrote this track together. Most people interpret this song in different ways. Avril states its about feeling different from herself after she starts living a new life with the lyrics, “How does it feel to be different from me? Are we the same?”
My Happy Ending- This was another single released from the album written by Avril and Butch Walker. It’s about Avril losing someone that meant a lot to her and how she never got her happy ending from him with the lyrics, “You were everything, everything that I wanted. We were meant to be supposed to be but we lost it. And all of the memories so close to me just fade away. All this time you were pretending, so much for my happy ending.”
Nobody’s Home- Avril wrote this song herself about a girl she knew in high school who was headed down the wrong path in life and how no one could help her with the lyrics, “I couldn’t help her. I just watched her make the same mistakes again.”
Forgotten- This track was written by Avril and Chantal. Avril wrote about feeling unwanted and forgotten with the lyrics “I’m giving up on everything because you messed me up. Don’t know how much you screwed it up. You never listened, that’s just too bad.”
Who Knows- This track was written by Avril and Chantal. The lyrics consist of an uplifting message of being yourself and living everyday like its your last day. “Who knows what could happen, do what you do just keep on laughing. One things true, there’s always a brand new day.”
Fall To Pieces- This track was also written by Avril and Chantal. It’s the feeling of being in love with someone and not wanting to fall apart. “Wanna know who you are. Wanna know where to start. I wanna know what this means. Wanna know how you feel, wanna know what is real. I wanna know everything.”
Freak Out-This track was written by Avril with help from Evan and her drummer Matt. The song is about living your life to your standards and standing up for yourself with the lyrics, “Try to tell me what I shouldn’t do. You should know by now I won’t listen to you.”
Slipped Away-This track was written by Avril and Chantal about the death of Avril’s grandfather. With the lyrics, “The day you slipped away, was the day I found it won’t be the same.”

In other news:
Supposedly, while Avril had a girls-only vacation with her friends it was reported that Avril got a new tattoo with the words “Abbey Dawn” on her left bicep. If it’s true, I’m curious to see what it looks like!
Also; Avril was interviewed in her favorite photographer, Mark Liddell’s new book titled “Exposed 10 Years in Hollywood”. She talks about her 2008 Prestige shoot with him when she had to pose as a porcelain doll.
(Questions For Avril From Book)
Was it your idea to do a doll story? How did it come about?
-Mark asked me to do a cover for Prestige magazine and if there was a type of photo shoot I would like to do. The opportunity was exciting, as I always wanted to do a doll shoot. I discussed my ideas with Mark, that I wanted to be on a hard wood floor with toys around me. Mark really got my vision and did a great job of pulling it all together.
How does a rock girl feel wearing haute couture from Paris?
-I’ve never done a photo shoot like this before. The dressed I wore were tens of thousands of dollars and like nothing I’ve ever worn before. The black Marchesa dress was like a black wedding dress. They were so over the top and I could barely move in them. I really felt like I was playing dress up.
Were you OK with Mark twisting the doll story idea to become edgy and dark?
-Mark did such a great job blending haute couture with a unique edginess. It was perfect.
What did your friends think when they saw you in the doll pics?
-I had such a fun time doing this photo shoot and was really excited to show my friends the photos. They freaked out when they saw them because I look like a live doll. It’s funny!
Are you always comfortable in front of the camera? Does the choice of photographer make a difference?
-Mark is one of my favorite photographers in the world. We work a lot together and he always makes me feel comfortable. Mark’s a brilliant photographer and it’s always so great to work with him.
(Marks Question About Avril From the Book)
Why did you use such ugly dolls in the Avril Lavigne shoot?
-The doll concept could have looked too pretty, too cutesy. Avril has an edge to her. I wanted her to be this naughty porcelain doll, a doll that would set other dolls on fire. I wanted to show a dark side to these shots. It’s great with Avril as she is so hands-on with imagery. She immerses herself in all of the projects we do together. There is a sparkle behind her eyes that says so much about her.
LET GO: Avril’s Songs And What They Mean.
Let’s start with her first album, 2002’s Let Go shall we?
Losing Grip: Avril co-wrote this song along side Cliff Magness about the betrayal she felt from an ex-boyfriend. The track show’s the more angsty Avril with a hard rock twist as she sings “why should I care? ‘Cause you weren’t there when I was scared. I was so alone.” Avril has stated in the past that this was her favorite song off of Let Go.
Complicated: Who could forget this pop hit from 2002? Avril co-wrote this song along side The Matrix. Avril stated this song was about guys and how they treat you differently when they’re around their friends. Avril also stated it’s about people being fake and how life can get complicated as she sings, “Why’d you have to go and make things so complicated? I see the way you’re acting like you’re somebody else gets me frustrated. Life’s life this.”
Sk8er Boi: This track totally trade-marked Avril’s sound and style. It showed a more upbeat poppy side (similar to “Girlfriend”). Avril wrote this song in a story style of how you should like someone for who they are versus how they’re judged. The track was written by Avril and The Matrix.
I’m With You: This was the first ballad released by Avril during the Let Go era. It was written by Avril and The Matrix. Avril stated she wrote this song when she was feeling really down and lonely with the words, “It’s a damn cold night, trying to figure out this life.” (Hands down my favorite song of all time!)
Mobile: This acoustic pop/rock track was written by Avril and C. Magness. Avril wrote about how everything around her was changing. How she had to be from one place to the next and how the fame world was a bit bizzare. “Everything’s changing when I turn around all out of my control I’m a mobile,” she sings referring to herself as a babies crib mobile. “Hanging from the ceiling, life’s a mobile. Spinning ‘round with mixed feelings crazy and wild. Sometimes I wanna scream out loud.” These words show a mixed up teenager dealing with life.
Unwanted: Avril co-wrote this track with C. Magness about her experience with her ex-boyfriends parents. When she dated this individual his parents didn’t accept her for who she was. They thought she was different. And though Avril tried her best to be kind and respectful, they didn’t care. She sings, “I had a smile on my face and I sat up straight. I wanted to know you, I wanted to show you.” This track showed the more harder rocking Avril.
Tomorrow: Avril co-wrote this track with Curtis Frasca and Sabelle Breer. The track shows a more mellow, depressive Avril as she expresses of feeling down. “I don’t know how I’ll feel tomorrow. I don’t know what to say. Tomorrow is a different day.” This track easily shows a normal teenager dealing with the normal teenager feelings.
Anything But Ordinary: Avril co-wrote this track along side The Matrix. The title of this track was the original title of the album, but Avril asked to rename it to Let Go because she was letting go of her feelings and she wanted everyone else to do the same. The track easily define Avril as she sings, “I’d rather be anything but ordinary please.”
Things I’ll Never Say: Avril also co-wrote this track along side The Matrix. When the track was finalized Avril was unhappy with the poppy sound and asked for it to have a more acoustic vibe which you hear today. Avril wrote it about really liking a guy but figured she’d never get the chance to say what was truly on her mind.
My World: Avril co-wrote this track with C. Magness about growing up in her hometown of Napanee, Canada as she sings “Never wore a cover-up, always beat the boys up. Grew up in a five thousand population town. Made my money by cutting grass. Got fired by a fried chicken ass all in a small town, Napanee.”
Nobody’s Fool: Avril co-wrote this track with Peter Zizzo about not being molded into anything people want her to be. It was a great teenage powerment anthem. “Just trying to figure out exactly what I’m about if it’s with or without you I don’t need your doubt in me,” adding, “I might have fallen for that when I was 14 and a little more green but it’s amazing what a couple of years can mean.”
Too Much To Ask: Avril co-wrote this track with C. Magness. about the anger towards an ex-boyfriend who simply chose weed over her. “It’s the first time I’ve ever felt this lonely, wish someone would cure this pain. It’s funny when you think it’s gonna work out till you chose weed over me you’re so lame.”
Naked: This song was written about feeling in love and trusting someone and how you’ve never felt like that before. “Cause I’ve never felt like this before. I’m naked around you, does it show? You see right through me and I can’t hide. I’m naked around you and it feels so right,” she sings.
Stay tuned for the Under My Skin edition!
Responses To YouTube Posts.
I’ve had a YouTube channel specifically to promote Avril’s work and with it has come countless of views and comment posts. I’ve read a variety of thoughts and opinions from fans and even haters. Today I went through a couple of videos to discuss what I think or simply to shoot down rumors!
I recently came across a comment of a user asking me to do make-up tutorial. If you have no idea what these are, many users will post videos on YouTube showing other’s how to apply make-up a specific way that Avril does. To answer the user, I could careless about making make-up tutorial’s. My YouTube channel is strictly to promote Avril and her work. Make-up is the least of my interest. Search on YouTube and you’ll find hundreds of videos relating to that!
I’ve also been asked many times if I know Avril personally. The answer is no. However, I know many many people through Avril (friends who speak with her here and there.)
I’ve also come across countless of posts somewhere along the lines stating “Avril changed so much! I miss the tomboy skater girl from 2002!” These posts are super annoying to read, if we’re being honest. 2002 was nearly eight years ago. Think back to how you were eight years ago. Are you the same now? I know I’m not. I’m totally different in literally every way. Could you imagine Avril, at 25, running around with a wife beater and tie with baggy pants? People would call her immature and many more hurtful words. Avril went from a kid to a woman. Get back to me in another eight years, and we’ll talk!
I’ve gotten many comments and messages asking if Avril and her ex-guitarist Evan Tabuenfeld have ever dated. And the answer is, no. They’ve been best friends since 2002 and to this day they still talk on a daily bases. They write music together and so forth. I could never see them together in the first place. In my eyes it’s like a brother and sister dating. It wouldn’t happen.
I’ve gotten a few comments lately commenting on Avril’s slight weight gain. In my eyes she is a healthy, 25-year-old woman with womanly curves. It’s sad when the media picks up things like this and pick apart women who gain even a little amount of weight. This kind of negative feedback hits younger girls who feel they must be skinny to be accepted. Avril shows that it’s okay to look normal. Props to Avril!
Someone once asked me what Avril’s favorite song/movie was. Her favorite party song is Outkast’s “Hey Ya” and the Goo Goo Doll’s “Iris”. Avril has said her current favorite movie is Home Alone 2.
After it was announced mid-2009, Avril’s fourth album would be released in November 2009, all fans were dissapointed when they found out this release date was pushed back. Many people questioned why, and Avril told a fansite that she had 10 songs she really loved but she wanted to take her time to write the last few tracks. This was before the announcement of her seperation from her husband Deryck Whibley. I believe she was dealing with a lot emotionally and most likely wanted to write about it. Another reason is, Avril never officially confirmed it herself that the release date would be in November. A magazine said it. Lastly, things always get pushed back especially in the music industry. It’s a tough place with loads of work being done and it’s normal to find things getting pushed back.
I’ve also been getting comments regarding Avril’s speaking/singing voice. From 2002, in interviews Avril spoke/sang with a lower voice. As she got older, her voice got higher. I believe this was because she was taking voice lessons and it strengthened her vocal performance. Yes, it’s blatantly obvious it’s changed. Perhaps we’ll hear a different side of her voice with the next album!
After Avril’s third album release with 2007’s The Best Damn Thing, many people were pumped to hear the new sound until the single “Girlfriend” was released. Many fans didn’t understand the drastic change and felt a sense of anger and betrayal. I on the other hand embraced the change and accepted that she wanted to make a fun record because she was at a happy place in her life. She wanted to have fun in the studio, on stage and in her life. What better way to do it with an up-beat album? She didn’t loose Avril, the attitude and presence was still there. I remember coming across countless of disrespectful comments towards Avril and her sudden change. But I just don’t think people understand that as an artist you’re supposed to show different area’s of creative. People get bored with the same repetitive sound, Avril tried something new while still staying in touch with herself and found a way to deliver something fresh! I personally enjoyed the album very much! It’s definitely not her best, but it’s still Avril!
I’ve gotten many comments on Avril’s fragrance commercial for Black Star. Many people ask if it smells good and if they should get it. I bought it the second it came out, it took me awhile to get used to, but I definitely love it and wear it everyday. I get countless of compliments of smelling good…all thanks to Avril!
Lastly, I’d like to discuss the shocking announcement of Avril’s split from her husband of 3 years Deryck Whibley. The separation was announced in September after much speculation and to be honest, I wasn’t surprised. I felt like it was coming. They had acted like they weren’t married for a long time. They seemed distant when spotted together. People fall out of love. It happens. But I’ve also realized that it is none of my business of what happened behind the scenes and I put it into the perspective that I wouldn’t want someone all up in my business if I was going through a divorce. It wasn’t my marriage, it was there’s. They were together for 6 1/2 years and all things are made to be broken.
Thanks for reading! More soon!
